You are probably one of the many people who are guilty of having spent most of their days glued on the blue screen – either their mobile phones, tablets, or televisions. All these have an important purpose which is why they have been developed. However, if you think about how it has affected relationships, you would soon realize that most people would be seating side by side and yet seem to be in another dimension. Guilty?

According to a survey performed earlier this year, Filipinos consume about 3 hours and 57 minutes a day using the internet, particularly on Facebook. The Philippines is among the 40 countries who are very active with social media. How often do you take a photo and share it on different social media platforms? Some would say that Filipinos may have forgotten to say grace before meals because what they have in mind is to take “Intagrammable” photos to share (or boast?) with friends.

The same goes for the use of other mobile devices such as tablets. Have you seen how the children’s behavior has been affected by the constant use of these devices? Apart from affecting their posture for constantly stooping while playing their devices from practically anywhere, some video games today are a bit violent that make children’s frustrations turn into rage. You can sometimes just see how children would suddenly have outbursts when scolded or when a grown-up points out their mistakes. Instead of them listening, they would reason out and sometimes just shout on top of their lungs. Now, that is a negative impact of letting children use their mobile devices more than necessary.

Do you feel being hypnotized as soon as you turn on your televisions? Television viewing has never been the same. We all grew up having the basic television in our individual homes. In the 80’s there were Betamax and VHS, then the Laser Disc and Compact Disc players. These were great devices which have kept us inside our homes during weekends. But now, thanks to the development of smart TVs, we can now enjoy hundreds of movies from Netflix, iflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. Binge-watching has now become the latest “thing” among kids and millennials, as well. All these devices have been created for a purpose. Unfortunately, not all people are using it accordingly, which unluckily leads them to uncomfortable situations. Always remember that anything taking more than necessary has a negative effect. All the devices mentioned can make our lives so much easier if we know how to use them properly.

The mobile phone was created to help people be connected to their loved ones whenever and wherever they are. But when it was incorporated with other features, it has become any anyone’s toy that makes one spend long hours chatting, or even watch movies, since there are apps that allow you to watch movies. This goes the same with the tablets. They almost have the same capabilities as a mobile phone, the only difference is that some lower end models do not sim slots. There just seems to be an urgency to be online all the time. And that goes the same as well with Smart TVs, as it allows you to enjoy watching movies or connect your game consoles, and you would just completely forget about the time.

With the television, however, although this may also make one get hooked on watching endless movies, it can be used for other purposes, especially to those who may be working at home.
