Taking Care of Your Household Appliances During Summer
The scorching heat of summer makes us really tired which is
why a lot would be going to the beach to enjoy the summer sun. However, not
everyone may have the time to go on a short vacation because of work or some
school work, thus, they tend to use their air conditions and electrical fans
for longer hours. While this would help us feel a lot better, particularly that
the temperature just kept on rising, this may not be good for our appliances.
There may be more people at home during the summer and that would
mean that all the appliances might be working more. Therefore, you must ensure
that all of your appliances are working efficiently. Consider the following
maintenance tips to guarantee a joyful summer vacation at home.
1.
Refrigerator
There is nothing more refreshing than an ice-cold
glass of water or your favorite juice (some would actually prefer colas). Of
course, in order to make this happen, you must ensure that your refrigerator is
working properly. Keep in mind the following:
a.
Try to
limit the number of times of opening the refrigerator door. You see, every time
that the door is opened, the temperature inside drops to several degrees. This means that the bottles of water and juices
that you are trying to cool may take longer and with that, it will make the
compressor work harder to maintain the temperature inside.
b.
You may want to save yourself from going to the
supermarket because of the torturous heat of the sun that you decide to buy a
lot of food and stock them inside the refrigerator. However, when you overload
the refrigerator with food, the compressor must work more in order to keep
things cold and fresh. Both the freezer and the fridge spaces work most
efficiently when there is enough air that can circulate around the foods. When you
overload the refrigerator with food it can lead to inefficient cooling which
can eventually damage the compressor and may spoil your food.
c.
After some number of years of using a refrigerator,
the door gaskets may no longer seal properly particularly when there is a buildup
of sticky food on the gasket which may require you to pull the door harder.
When this happens, the door gasket may tear. To ensure that the door gaskets
are free from such buildup, clean it using a sponge soaked with warm water.
This will not only keep your food fresh it will also save you on repair bills
and electricity.
d.
Over time, dust and dirt may accumulate on your
refrigerator coils. Ensure that you vacuum off this area to keep your refrigerator
running efficiently.
2.
Stoves/Ranges/Ovens
Kids being at home most of the time may
always ask for food. Thus, it may require moms to cook often. To ensure that
the stove/range is well-maintained:
a.
Make it a habit to clean of the stove top of any
debris or grease so that cockroaches or other pests may not be attracted to it
which may cause some health problems to your family.
b.
Clean up any spills and drips inside the oven as
soon as possible to avoid smoke and fire.
c.
Make sure that there are no leftovers which may
rot over time and cause bacteria build-up inside the oven.
3.
Washing Machine
The hot summer sun can make you hit the
shower more than you used to. And with this, it would mean having loads of
dirty clothes. Follow these tips to keep your washing machine working efficiently.
a.
Never overload your washing machine. It would
make the machine work 2x as hard which can damage it.
b.
Never load heavy material such as carpets or
mats. It is much better to wash it by hand.
c.
If you are not using the washing machine, leave the
cover open to let the moisture out and keep it from developing a musty smell.
d.
Use the proper setting of the washing machine.
You may want to get things done right away especially if there are loads of
dirty laundry. However, that would not help. Instead, make sure that you
properly sort out the kinds of materials to wash to keep your clothes from
being damaged.
4.
Television
We might tend to sit for long hours in front
of our television because there may seem nothing else to do. While this can
keep the children out of trouble, you must ensure that you know how to take
care of your television so you can enjoy it for a long time.
a.
Limit the number of hours of watching the
television. It does not only help your television to last long, but it will also
allow your eyes to have a rest and save you from paying high electricity bills.
b.
If you happen to place your LED TV on top of a
table, ensure that the spot where you have placed it is not the place where people
pass by often so that you avoid it from being knocked down. This is why it is
advisable to use the wall brackets instead.
c.
If you are not using the television, unplug it
from the socket. Even if it is turned off, still it consumes a little amount of
electricity. Additionally, you prevent your television from being damaged due
to a sudden surge of electricity.
5.
Air Condition/ Electric Fan
These are the most abused appliances in our
home during the summer. And it is for this reason that we need to ensure that we
always make sure that they are well-maintained.
1.
Clean the air conditioning unit every 4 months
so that it can run efficiently and would not damage the compressor from working
too hard to give off cool air.
2.
Use a timer. It does not only let you use the
air condition/electric fan for a longer time, but it will also save you electricity.
3.
Ensure that all doors and windows are closed
when the air conditioning unit is turned on.
4.
Clean the blades of the electric fan as often as
possible. They tend to accumulate dust easily particularly if you live along a
heavy road.
We have more than a month more to enjoy the summer. Take
advantage of the time to spend it with your family. Whether you go on a
vacation or just have a staycation, for as long as you have your loved ones, it
will always be a great time.
