How To Effectively Save Energy Consumption

Knowing how much we need to spend each day, every household should indeed find extra means on how to sustain for the needs of the family. While most employers may just be focusing on the basic needs of the family such as food, water, and shelter, the importance of using electricity each day may have been overlooked which is equally important.

Indeed, some people would say that they can live without food and electricity for a number of days but not without water. However, we live in the modern world where electricity is an integral part of our everyday living. Children as young as 3 years old should be taught about to conserve water and electricity. Despite having enough supply, still, it is no reason that we need to neglect the importance of saving up.

For the past months, we have endured a long, hot summer due to the El Nino Phenomenon. Apart from the water shortage that most of the families in Metro Manila have suffered, the increase in their monthly electric bill burdened them more. It is like being trapped in a place where there just seem to be no way out. The only answer for that would be to endure and to make a little sacrifice.

Save on Energy
Recently from the news, the Energy Department announced that there will be an increase with our monthly electric bill. For those who just have few appliances, this may not be so much of a problem. But for those who have bigger homes and use various appliances all at the same time, the difference from last month’s billing will be truly felt.

How do we save energy effectively? Here are some ways which can help you decrease your energy consumption and save up a few pesos for much important things:
1.     When using your washing machine, be sure that is always fully loaded. Of course, there is a need to separate the whites and colored clothes, however, if there are just a few clothes that you wish to wash, it would save you a lot if you would  do handwash, instead.

2.     Use Energy Star-qualified CFL and LED bulbs. These LEDs and CFLs use 20-25% of the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs. These may cost a little over than the regular bulbs that you use, however, it emits lesser energy and has a longer lifetime.
3.     We tend to hold on to our things for a long time. While we think that we are saving money by keeping our old appliances, we actually are not. Older appliances tend to consume more energy. If you plan to buy new ones, make sure to check if they have ENERGY STAR logo. This means that the appliance is energy efficient. Just like AVision TVs. Since they are all LED TVs, this means that you do not consume too much energy while using it.

4.     Having a restful sleep is what we need after a long, tiring day. And turning on the air conditioning unit will easily lead us to dreamland. However, you must realize that using it for longer hours would mean adding a few pesos on your monthly bill. It is helpful to purchase an air conditioning unit that comes with a timer. That way you can control the number of hours that the unit is used.
5.     Take advantage of the brightness of the day by opening your curtain so that natural light comes in. This would avoid you from turning on your light inside your home.

6.     If the sun is not directly hitting your room, you may opt to open the windows instead of turning on the air conditioning unit during the afternoon.
7.     Make it a habit to clean your air conditioning unit every 3 months. Take out the filter and wash it at least once a week. It will lengthen the lifespan of the appliance and at the same time it can help you avoid getting sick by inhaling dust.

9.     If you often use the computer, during periods of inactivity switch it to SLEEP or HIBERBATE instead of using a screen saver because the latter consumes much energy.
10. We tend to open the oven every so often to check if what we are cooking is done. If you use an electric oven, make sure that you set it at the right temperature and set it at the right time. Avoid opening the oven while it is turned on to avoid the hat from escaping. It lengthens the cooking time when heat drops, therefore, it would mean additional minutes of using electricity.
11. June- October is supposed to be the rainy season. However, we still feel the heat of summer on some days. Instead of using the dryer to dry your clothes, take advantage of the sun’s heat instead.

12. Turn off all appliances when not in use. This is also important when you are leaving your homes. Make sure that everything is turned off to ensure that your appliances will not be affected should a surge of electricity happen. Also, this would prevent your house from catching fire.

Energy conservation is essential and beneficial for many reasons:
1.     You can save money.
2.     Increase your property value, and
3.     Protect the environment all through simple energy-saving measures.

These are great benefits that you can gain from saving energy. By simply taking a small step towards living a more energy-conscious lifestyle, you can begin to enjoy all of the perks of being energy efficient plus you are able to save money for other important things.
