Confusion Over The New Television Technology

With a huge range of television out there, one may just be too confused on which type of television to choose and what are the differences among them. Television before makes use of the CRT or cathode ray tube in which the “cathode” is made up of heated filaments inside a vacuum tube made of glass. The “ray” is a flow of electrons which reacts with the phosphor-coated screen on contact that has the ability to change its color properties that enable an image to be produced.

The death of the CRT was the birth of the LED TV. It is highly unlikely that there are any running CRT TVs nowadays since the modern TVs offer a lot more than the older ones. So, what is an LED TV? An LED TV is actually an LCD screen. An LCD screen makes use of the same technology as a typical LCD screen, however, the difference being in the way that it’s backlit. LCD screen makes use of cold cathode fluorescent light (CCFL) in order to produce bright, rich and vivid colors, the LED uses light-emitting diodes to provide the backlight.

The confusion may not end there. Although it has mentioned that practically an LED TV is an LCD screen as well, there are three types of LED TVs which you need to be aware about.

·        Edge-lit LED
As the name implies, Edge-Lit LED TV has LEDs arranged around the rim of the display behind the LCD panel which are facing the screen. This makes use of fewer LEDs, thus making the display to be slimmer, thus, the cost is not as much as you would expect. To create an image, the light is reflected across the screen evenly.

·        Full-Array LED
With this type of LED display, a grid of LED lights behind the LCD display in which the LED shines directly away towards which creates a bright and uniform picture. The efficiency of Full-Array LED displays is similar to CCFL LCDs.

It also has the capability wherein groups of LEDS can be turned on and off when there is a need to provide better control of the brightness.

·        RGB LED
When we talk about LEDs, most often, we refer it as emitting white light. However, it actually produces a light that is closer to yellow which sometimes is responsible for creating a color shift in the image that is seen on the screen.  White LED lights with a grouping of red, green, and blue were developed by manufacturers to improve the quality of the image. When all these are used together, the RGBs LEDSs create a pure white and truer colors across the spectrum.
