Measuring the Size of Your TV

Image titled Measure a TV Step 1

Most often, customers feel that they have been tricked in some way regarding the actual size of the tv that they have purchased. While we have all been used to measuring things from one side to the other side, measuring the size of the TV is a relatively simple task that not most of us may be aware of. Getting accurate measurements will be essential to make sure you have enough space in the room where you plan to set up your TV. Besides the screen size, there are a number of other important measurements that you'll need to make when you're browsing the market.

When we talk about TV size, we are not actually measuring the television that includes the case or the edges of the television vertically or horizontally. But rather, we measure the screen of the television from end to end diagonally.

How To Measure Your TV
Measuring screen size is going to be the most important measurement since this is how most retailers list new TVs. Hold the end of the tape measure in one corner and extend it diagonally across to the opposite corner. Make sure the tape measure is inside the housing so you're only measuring the visible screen area. Be sure you write down the measurement. That might seem obvious, but when you start comparing multiple models you'll want all the data laid out clearly in front of you.

The Significance of Knowing the Size of your TV
Two factors come into play when you're talking about maximum screen size: resolution and room domination. Most TVs now are 1080p, and that's a lot of pixels. Even at the largest flat panel screen sizes available today, you're not going to see pixels sitting at 9 feet. If the TV (or projector) isn't very good, you might see other artifacts like video noise or dithering, but you're not likely to see pixels. If you're sitting closer to such a large TV, pixels may start getting visible, but you'd have to be sitting awfully close. This is one of the reasons I said Ultra HD (4K) TVs are Stupid, and why there are at least three TV improvements more worthwhile than Ultra HD 4K, and there's more math in that both articles about what resolution the human eye can actually see.

Apart from wanting to have the largest size of TV that you want and afford, the size of TV that you choose will depend on the size of the room where you are going to position your TV.
